J'rem had noticed V'tor's expression, and he sighed, rubbing his eyes wearily.
"She can stay. You can explain it me later. Go wait in the Dining Hall and I'll be there after I've finished here."

He paused, eyes unfocusing as he spoke to Garreth before adding; “The Gather is in a few days and provided you all prove to me you can behave well, I’ll allow you to go. Now, if any one you know of missed this lesson without good reason, come and tell me and I’ll be having a chat with them. Sarani, you’re to stay behind. Now, next lesson is tomorrow afternoon, after the noon day meal and before your evening chores.”
He gave them a slightly playful smile, the first real one since the lesson had started. “Now scram, the lot of you.”

Sarani stepped over to him, looking pale, drained even. What little animation that she would usually have had was gone, all that was left was tiredness. "I really am sorry I was late sir" she fiddled with the seam on her shirt, noticing that her fingers were still a little bloody, deep in around the nail bed.

J’rem raised an eyebrow at the state of her hands, wondering what on earth had happened. Glancing around at the later afternoon, he frowned thoughtfully at Garreth before turning back to Sarani.
Sighing, he decided to at least do something to alleviate the girl’s fear of him. He hated it when people did that, just because he was such a tall, broad person…
I love you as you are. Garreth said firmly, eyes whirling sedately as he rested his muzzle on the grass. Giving his dragon a soft smile, the brown rider used the brown as support, placing his hand on Garreth’s foreleg and descending slowly to the ground, his tall frame curling and long, wiry legs crossing carefully so as not to irritate the old scars before he looked up at the girl.
“I’m still going to punish you,” he said sternly, before adding in a softer, more cajoling tone, “Now, as your teacher I think I’m entitled to an explanation. Also as your teacher, I don’t like to see my students distressed. Now sit down and tell us both what’s troubling you, and why you were late.”
Sassy had curled herself around his neck tightly as he’d sat down, and J’rem paused to detach her tail from its stranglehold before looking up expectantly at the girl.

"I lost one of my patients in the Infirmary" Sarani finally admitted after a while. She closed her eyes. "She should have lived, her and her babe both." she sat on the ground so that she could curl her arms around her legs. She ignored her tears, as if refusing to admit they were there meant that they really weren't.
"I couldn't save them. All I could do was watch her bleed from where the" her hands were in tight fists and she forced herself to relax so that she could explain why she was so upset. "She was a trader, and their herb woman decided to help the birth by cutting the mother" her voice was soft, angry and pained all at once. "She was loosing too much blood and their was nothing we could do about it" her hands were twisting the fabric of her shirt in her hands, wringing it hard.
"I stayed behind to clean her up, her and her babe, so that her family could say goodbye" her voice cracked. "Its worse if you can't see that their gone, that whatever makes them them is no longer in the body" now she cried for real, shoulders shaking for the first time since Saraxan died. She hadn't seen his body, and it had taken her till now to admit that he was gone.
ooc: I am guessing that there is an infirmary of some sort.

J’rem listened quietly as the girl began to sob, his finger touching his nose as it did when he was thoughtful. And he was, he was trying to think of how to quiet the girl. She was a candidate; it was hid duty as far as he was concerned to look out for them.
“Perhaps this sounds redundant, but it wasn’t your fault.” he said quietly, leaning back against his crooning dragon’s foreleg to stretch the ache in his leg out. “I’m no healer, I’m merely a harper and a dragonman, but I do know how it feels to lose something you fight for. It’s life Sarani. You can’t change it, only mourn it, celebrate it and try to move on. It sucks as you young ones say, I know, I lost my cousin to some disease of some sort years back. Watching her waste away was the worst thing I’d ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot.”
Subconsciously, he rubbed the scars on his ribs, and Garreth’s wing flexed slightly, showing the grotesque silver lines along his underside.
“I can’t say to forget how much it hurt,” J’rem continued, “But I can say that you’re not to let it eat you up. Now, I’ll be kind and let you off punishment this time around, but next time, I expect you here. I expect your chores to be done as well as healer duties. But I also expect you to feel you can come to me as a teacher. Am I understood?” His expression softened slightly, becoming more pleasant and gentle.

Sarani ducked her head down, nodding rather miserably. "I hate crying" she admitted. Her breath was let out slowely as she forced herself calm. "I'll, well, if I get caught up can I send I message to you?" she asked "Much as I'd love to say I'll be on time every lesson I don't know how often emergencies are going to crop up" she gnawed her lip. "Shells, I wish 'raxan was here" she muttered.
"I'll make a point not to be late" she told him "And do chores and Healer duties. I'll even promise to eat once a day if you like" she rubbed her eyes, crying and the events of the last eighteen hours having left her exhausted. She leaned over and impulsively gave him a hug. "The day I stop caring about the people I help is the day I stop Healering." she told him firmly. Still holding him she asked softly "Do you still miss your cousin? I miss my brother so much it feels like I'm breaking."

J’rem automatically stiffened in surprise as the girl’s arms encircled his broad frame, and Garreth rumbled his own cautious amusement, eyes whirling slightly. J’rem realised the girl was merely seeking comfort though, and it reminded him of Alirana or one of the children when they came to him for a cuddle when they were lonely or upset about something.
Sighing ruefully, the Wingsecond and Candidate Master allowed one muscled arm around her, patting her back gently.
“A message will be fine, however if you miss anything crucial, I expect you to report to me later on to catch up.” he said. “If you truly want to Impress, you’ll do it. As for eating,” he pulled her back and raised a slightly mocking eyebrow, “That is an order that is not to be disobeyed. Skipping more than one meal is bad enough in itself, and you are still growing up.”
Her quiet question caused him to pause and consider it for a moment as he tried to process an adequate response.
“I miss lots of people I loved and lost Sarani,” he said quietly, “But at least, with my cousin, I have a little reminder here of her and what she was. A beautiful little reminder.” A soft smile alighted his features at the thought of Alirana, with her golden-red curls that would deepen to the same deep red as her mother’s when she got older, and the same dark brown, sensual eyes that seemed to be a trait within their bloodline.

She looked at him and made a face. "Guess I better find some food then huh" she gave him a smile. "Thank you" she hugged im again. "For letting me get all girly and cry" she added. She gave a frown "So I can only miss one meal a day, and I'll always catch up on classwork. I like working on stuff" she told him. "Learning is good."

"Learning is what gets you places in life, even if you're a dragonrider." J'rem chuckled as she hugged him again. "Its no problem, I plan on making sure you lot know I'm approachable. If it means putting up with tears, I guess..."
We can do it. Garreth said amusedly.
J'rem chuckled as he stood up and shooed her away gently. "I have things to do now and its getting late. Now off you go."

Sarani gave a sweet smile "I'll save my tears for you" she teased, before standing, "I did enjoy your class sir" she told him. "and Garreth, thank you too" she told him "For not minding my tears" she gave them both a smile again, not knowing how close the words were to the truth, before heading off for food, not more study.
